P1 Engines WKA National and GrandNational Champion
October 6, 2011 - P1 Engines continued to show their speed and power at both the World Karting Association (WKA) Manufacturer’s Cup program as well as the Calstate Karting Championship. Taking place on opposite coasts, P1 Engines powered drivers were able to take pole positions, main event victories and elusive national championships.
Competing in WKA action at the ultra fast New Castle Motorsports Park in New Castle, Indiana, P1 Engines would look to provide its customers with the power needed to run at the front of the field. Komet Sportsman pilot Zane Smith would flex his muscles after missing the morning qualifying session and be forced to start from the tail of the field. Coming from the back to the front, Smith claimed the heat race win and went on to score the main event victory later that day.

In five events, Smith claimed four, second place results and one victory, which under normal circumstances, would be enough to claim the national championship. Due to no divisional series in the state of California and therefore no divisional transfers, Smith would fall to second in the title chase.
Texan Mason Chelootz was at the front of the field and provided P1 Engines with another pair of podium results. Claiming the second step of the podium in Komet Lite, that would be enough to claim the championship. Chelootz would also see battle in the Leopard Only class where he battled wheel-to-wheel with Indianapolis 500 Champion Dan Wheldon. Making contact in the final corner, Chelootz would cross the stripe in P2 for his second podium result of the weekend.

With another strong result, Chelootz improved to finish second in the WKA Manufacturer’s Cup overall championship. Fellow P1 Engines powered driver Chris Wehrheim led the championship all season long, but would be involved in mid-race contact, ruining any chance of a victory and dashing the hopes of anther WKA title.
Californian front-runner Raquel Martinez claimed the pole position in the Komet Junior Heavy class but was unable to retain the position in the main event where she finished second. Michigan resident Alex Keyes improved from his 19th place qualifying effort having a great drive to come home P5.
In the Komet Junior Lite class, Martinez would once again be near the pointy end of the field. After qualifying just inside the top ten, Martinez improved in the main event to secure the fourth position as well as a second place result in the overall points championship.
Back on the left coast in California, P1 Engines drivers would see action in the Calstate Karting Championships final round. Royal McKee would compete in the KPV category qualifying on the inside of row two but would rise to the top of the podium at the end of the day.
After struggling in qualifying, Wyatt May won his first PRD Junior main event of the season. Keeping the podium streak alive, May also came home in the third position in KPV2. Teammate Jason Hannegan claimed the overall series title in PRD.
Andrew Murowatz had a great run in PRD 1 having never run outside the top three. After qualifying on the pole position, Murowatz would run to a third place podium result securing second overall in the series championship adding to his third place result in the KPV1 title.
Next on the docket for P1 Engines will be at the Lancaster Grand Prix where P1 Engines powered drivers will look to continue their success and stand atop the podium.
